Day 11

No more 30 Days, 30 Reasons. When coming up with Day 11's reason, I thought about how ridiculous it is that I feel the need to go on and on about how the KXL is a horrible idea to my network of friends when there's not one single good reason to build the pipeline. Not one. The "good reasons" TransCanada gives are debunked lies, lies that poorly veil their corporate pursuit of profit and power. There are better ways to create jobs, jobs around more sustainable energy sources than oil...there are better ways for a company and a country to make money than the suicide of environmental exploitation.

There don't need to be 30 reasons to deny the permit when there's not even 1 really good reason to approve it.

Day 10

HAVE YOU HEARD? Big Oil has been hard at work renovating a GIANT swath of forest in Canada into a NEW WORLD WONDER tentatively called ::::drumroll:::: HELL! ON! EARTH! Replete with FIERY lakes of poison and venomous "FUMES OF MANY FLAVORS" (TM), this monstrosity of toxic wonder is a tribute of PESTILENTIAL PROPORTIONS to the vast and virulent greed, the super-septic self-destructive intentions of Big Oil! A MALICIOUSLY MAGNIFICENT celebration of the demise of nature and humankind as we know it! And if President Obama will be so gracious, HELL! ON! EARTH! may be coming to an aquifer near you! Day 9

Anyone still able to deny the realities of climate change has undoubtedly succumbed to the marketing savvy of groups like The Donors Trust and Donors Capital Fund. These groups spend millions of dollars each year to convince Americans that global warming is a hoax. And why? Because there's money to be made.

The Koch family has become filthy rich from our guilt-free consumption of oil. And the ironically named Knowledge and Progress Fund, operated by the Koch family, is one of the largest donors to The Donors Trust and Donors Capital Fund, though their support is not advertised. It's kept hush-hush because if people knew that their guilt-freeing climate skepticism was largely bankrolled by titans of the fossil fuel industry, they might realize they're being HAD by marketers.

Billionaires secretly fund attacks on climate science...

Day 8

KXL would cross Native lands in Canada and the US, threatening their sacred sites, their territories, their water sources. The exploitation of the Alberta tar sands has already devastated the livelihoods of Canadian Aboriginals, and the KXL pipeline would expand that devastation south into the US.

Day 7

Are you one of the lucky few reading this post who has gotten to drink the water from a flow well on my family's ranch?

If not, the best way I can describe how the water tastes...it's like your favorite most expensive bottled water, shipped from some far away and pure place, that water you pay extra for on special occasions or in nice restaurants...it's like that only fresh, and it flows straight out of the ground on the ranch. It's what irrigates the Sandhills from below, what my parents pour at dinner, what their organic grass-fed cows drink in the pasture.

The Ogallala Aquifer is a natural wonder and a national treasure, like Yellowstone or the Bald Eagle, and no foreign corporation should be allowed to poison it with oil and carcinogenic diluents. That's why Obama should reject the KXL.

"My family's ranch in the Nebraska Sandhills, the place where I was a boy, is in harm's way. That's a big reason I want Obama to reject the KXL.

I could wait to fuss until the fresh water wells are pumping oily backwash. I could wait to speak up until my family, their neighbors, the animals and grassy hills don't have a drop of clean water to share. I could wait for more carbon to be harvested from the tar sands and pumped through pipes and factories and machines into the sky, turning prairie into desert, water nowhere to be found...

Day 5

18 of the nation's top climate scientists have warned that building the pipeline poses a significant threat to our environment. Obama knows that killing the KXL is the right thing to do...anything but rejecting TransCanada's permit will be denying "the overwhelming judgment of science."

Day 4

TransCanada's safety record is best described as deplorable. It's existing pipeline, the Keystone 1, leaked 12 times in its first year of operation--the worst first-year safety record of any US pipeline. And because of the corrosive nature of hot diluted bitumen piped at high pressure, the number of Keystone spills over time can be expected to increase exponentially.

The worst of the Keystone 1 first year spills happened near Brampton, North Dakota. When a landowner reported the 60 foot geyser of tar sand crude, TransCanada's responders assumed he was joking and 21,000 gallons were spilled. TransCanada later shirked responsibility, saying that because it happened at a pump station it shouldn't count as a spill.

Day 3

TransCanada has been BULLYING landowners for years, threatening them with eminent domain if they don't sign over rights to their land for the KXL export pipeline. After a year of drought (linked to climate change, caused by increased carbon emissions, perpetuated by tar sand oil extraction) many small farmers and ranchers have succumbed to the strong-arming/legal threats/psychological abuse of TransCanada. Others are still struggling to keep their land amid threats of seizure.

Day 2

The massive Ogallala Aquifer provides fresh water to millions of Americans/livestock/crops that are the economic backbone of the Midwest. The KXL pipeline (even with the "new re-route") would cross and threaten the Ogallala Aquifer, jeopardizing the ecological and economic security of our country.

TransCanada talks about the KXL pipeline reducing America's reliance on foreign oil. But the real reason they need a pipeline to the Gulf is to export internationally. Their oil is not intended for the American market.
